The lack of regulation surrounding the global A.I. race can be attributed to the adoption of A.I. systems by the United States and China, and the companies that develop them as strategic national assets. In contrast, the European Union has produced a comprehensive range of legislation to regulate A.I. technology. However, a global alignment of domestic and international regulation is necessary to protect against the risks of unethical A.I. development and usage.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanaghan defined Cybercom’s next challenge as “build[ing] scale and strengthen[ing America’s] arsenal of cyber weapons, cyber shields and cyber warriors.”
While the ban was reversed the following week due to modifications in the proposed media legislation, Facebook’s ban highlights the powerful role that Big Tech plays in regulating online content and choosing what information gets to be viewed by its users.
